Esophagitis:

Esophagitis is often referred to as Radiation Esophagitis in the HD world because it usually afflicts radiation patients. I, however, was a lucky winner in the sweepstakes, and I only had chemo. Esophagitis is, as you could probably guess, an inflammation of the esophagus lining. The experts call it "temporary discomfort because of pain, swelling, or dryness of the throat." I'm still trying to figure out which it is: discomfort or pain?!?! All I know, is it was not enjoyable.

The patient information all says that these symptoms are supposed to occur as radiation begins and will subside as treatment progresses. I didn't have radiation, so I don't know about that. In my case, the cause is unknown, though chemo is suspected (as always). I had an endoscopy to determine the cause of my discomfort and esophagitis was part of the result. I was given medication and instructions on what to not eat in order to try and help it heal. I've been doing great ever since. At some point I may scan the pictures they gave me of my esophagus and stomach that show the problems, though maybe you don't want to see that! =)

In the meantime, here are some tips to try and help you through the problem until you see your doctor and get instructions from them. You should DEFINITELY talk to your doctor about your problem. I waited 6 weeks and paid dearly for it.
